In 1995 a buyer called with a request for a special
order Hitty in miniature, and
wondered if I would be interested in carving one out of Fossil Ivory. When
I was a little girl, I was deprived of having the pleasure of reading Hittys
story book, and at 41 years old had yet to meet her or hear of her story.
My first glimpse of Hitty, an antique American wood doll, was to see some photocopied pictures of the real
doll and a newer edition of her book. Suddenly, I found myself enraptured by
Hitty. The style of the little wood doll she was, and the obvious forthright character she
possessed. I took those photocopied pictures home with me and immediately set
out to carve a miniature version of her in fossil ivory. It was not long
after completing that first little Ivory Hitty that replicating the Original
Hitty in wood became an obsession. It wasn't as easy as one might think
when you first look at this simple little wooden doll. There are many
facets to her personality. Like no other I have seen before or since, this
little doll has soul. Capturing that soul has been about the hardest thing
I have done in my carving career. To be honest, I do not believe I have
captured her complete spirit yet, and often wonder if I have ever even come
close. I'm just not sure it can be done. I wonder as I carve her
now, if that spirit is only obtained through the doll's life experiences and
adventures. Hitty, after all, has lived for 200 years, give or take a year or
two, and she has had much in the way of experiences and adventures that have
shaped her little wooden spirit. I do believe it is the artists hands,
the intent in his or her mind and heart, and his or her own spirit that shapes
the character of the doll, but it is the patina of life that brings out the
dolls soul.
I will never forget my early experiences of Hitty. The more I learned of her, the more I carved her, the more people I shared with through her, the more I loved her. So many people have had similar encounters. Hitty is a doll that will persevere through generations to come, continuing to capture the hearts of those that meet her. Her resilient character, like her carved features, will withstand the test of time.
Welcome to the special world of Hitty.

A BIG Thanks to ALL who have supported my Hitty carving over the last number of years.
I fought hard to carve her, and am glad I did. She is one very special little doll.
At this time, I am not carving Hitty's, but if I should carve one at any point, I will post pictures of her on this site.
I do have some 'Mountain Ash' I hope to create two or three Hitty replicas from. They will be very special as the wood is said to come from Ireland!!!
THANK YOU AGAIN to all of you who Love HITTY in general. I do hope that her legacy continues on through all of you!!!
Both Series are discontinued until further notice. I apologize for any disappointment or inconvenience.
